Enterprising Des Moines NAACP Youth
Fundraise to Attend 100 Anniversary Convention
Des Moines....The Des Moines NAACP Youth and College Division (Youth Works) have set their sites on attending the 100th Annual NAACP National Convention in New York July 12 - 16, 2009. The group plans to send a delegation of young people to represent Des Moines' youth voice and share the extensive work of the Des Moines youth. They plan to raise $5,000 to help send 21 teens and young adults to this historic convention which will commemorate a century of civil rights activism for the NAACP. For many of these youth this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Your Help is Needed
Please help support our youth leadership. During the next two months, Youth Works is fundraising to help travel expenses. Youth Works is asking you to aid their efforts. Below are some of the activities in which the community is being asked to participate.

Eat at Ci Ci's Pizza on Monday, April 27
On Monday, April 27th, join the NAACP Youth Works at CiCi's Pizza, located at 4349 Merle Hay Road and the Youth Works will receive a portion of the proceeds. The buffet style meal costs $5 for adults and $3 for kids 10 and under. Click here for the event flier!

Apple Pies & Other Baked Goods
Youth Works members have been selling delicious homemade apple pies and other baked goods by special order. Deliveries are on their way.

Merle Hay Mall Community Day Bake Sale
On May 16, bring your family to Merle Hay Mall and enjoy homemade treats for a small fee.

Garage Sale
Find treasures at the Youth Works Garage Sale on Saturday, May 30 from 8am to 2pm at
6715 Brookview Drive in Urbandale, IA. Sale items include furniture, appliances, men, women and children's clothing, and much more.

Juneteenth BBQ Stand
Find us at the Juneteenth Celebration on June 20 at Evelyn K. Davis Park. We'll be selling delicious BBQ and cool refreshing smoothies.

Youth have always played a leading role in the NAACP. Des Moines Youth are active on many fronts.

Nationally
The Des Moines NAACP Youth & College Division continues to have a national impact. Kameron Middlebrooks (left) currently serves on the NAACP National board of Directors. Jessica Avant (pictured top left) placed third during the national ACT-SO competition in the play writing division. Youth Council Recently performed her play The "N" Word as a kick-off to the Des Moines ACT-SO competition.
As in past years, with the support of the community, Des Moines Youth Works will send several delegates, alternates and observers to the National NAACP Convention this summer to represent Des Moines Youth.

Locally
Des Moines NAACP Youth Works drives numerous civil justice and youth efforts. Here are select a few:
-Led the Des Moines Jena Six Protest
-Chartered the College Chapter
-Annual Black History Banquet
-Teen Summit (In partnership with Des Moines Jack & Jill, Inc.)
-College Prep Day
-Community Awareness around issues of civil rights
-Member Eric Hall (above far right) honored with I'll Make Me a World in Iowa Heritage Legacy Youth Award for his community service.

ACT-SO
The 2009 local ACT-SO (the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) competition was held on Saturday, April 4th with metro area students competed in 15 categories of competition. Winners will advance to the national competition July 8 -12th in New York.

Mark your calendar: Celebrate our participants at the 2009 ACT-SO Showcase on Sunday, June 21 at 3:30 p.m. at the Mercy Medical Conference Center, east auditorium, in Des Moines.
